Born and educated in South Africa where I studied Fine Arts Painting. At that time Andy Warhol and other POP ARTISTS had gone of the canvas, on to the wall, so I followed their example with the objective of learning technique of cinema. Favorite Artist from that era was Robert Smithson (Land Art – Spiral Jetty), Sol LeWitt, Marcel Duchamp and the drawings of Picasso as well as the Pop & Conceptual movements.
The biggest cinematic influence on me was Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Conformist,” there were many others, but that one film decided my future.
Starting out as a production assistant, then art director in feature films, later moving into TV as an vision mixer/editor and finally in 1980 was invited to direct.Since then I have directed countless Commercials, a number Video clips, various Documentaries and one Short film. (2nd Short film “The Tollgate “ is awaiting approval)
In the 90’s I took a sabbatical and took some workshops in Directing actors, Screen writing with Robert McKee, Acting for directors and Script and screenplay analysis. At the same time I attained my Green Card for the USA on artistic merit, and directed a documentary and various commercials there before returning to Portugal.
I am currently living in Portugal with my wife and two daughters. Languages: English, Afrikaans & Portuguese. Passport: South African & European.
